Microsoft will no longer provide updates and support for the Windows 10 operating system after October 14th, 2025. So, where does this leave Windows 10 users? Let’s review your options together.
Windows 10 End of Support
For Windows 10 users, this means they will stop receiving tech support, security and driver updates, as well as software patches after October of this year. What options do they have?
Option #1: Upgrade to Windows 11.
If your computer is compatible (i.e., a newer model), you can simply download and install a Windows 11 version. It will auto-activate once the installation is complete and you are online.
However, that is not the case for computers made before 2017.
The minimum system requirements to run Windows 11 are as follows:
- CPU: At least a 1G Hz 64-bit processor with two computing cores minimum.
- RAM: 4 GB+.
- Storage: At least 64 GB.
- Display (for laptops): 11.6″, with at least HD (720p) resolution.
- Graphics: At least DirectX 12-compatible (WDDM 2.0 driver).
- Firmware: UEFI with secure boot option.
- TPM: Trusted Platform Module version 2.0.
Option #2: Upgrade your hardware.
Desktop owners can swap out hardware components (newer processor, add more RAM/storage, GPU replacement, or, in some cases, a new motherboard). However, laptop owners would need to purchase a newer model to continue receiving Windows support, automatic driver updates, and enjoy Windows 11 perks.
Option #3: Switch to a different OS.

Instead of upgrading to Windows 11, you can download and install open-source software. Some of the most popular choices include Ubuntu, Fedora, Linux Mint, Pop!_OS, and Zorin OS. The lesser-known non-Linux options are FreeBSD and ReactOS. The benefits of going the open-source route include no additional costs, robust customization, and security features.
Alternatively, you can join the Apple macOS family, but this can be costly for die-hard PC users and is probably better suited for those who already participate in the Apple ecosystem.
Option #4: Do nothing.
Yes, you can very well continue using Windows 10 after Microsoft ends support. But by doing so, you have to understand the risks. Opting to stick with Windows 10 means you can no longer rely on Windows Defender to keep malware and viruses away. Therefore, investing in a third-party security program is advisable. Also, you will most definitely run into hardware malfunctions in the long term due to a lack of driver updates. For example, your graphics may start acting up, your battery can stop charging, and you will also likely encounter slower speeds and deteriorating performance.
The Windows 10 End of Support Uncertainty
Even though Microsoft said it would end support for Windows 10 in less than seven months, the implementation methods leave us with many questions. For example, well over 50% of PC users still run Windows 10, and many cannot upgrade to Windows 11. Cutting those users from updates leaves them, at the very least, extremely vulnerable to ever-increasing cyber attacks. Not everyone can afford to upgrade by October, so this kind of move on Microsoft’s part, instead of providing an easy path, forces many to get creative with workarounds.
What do you do if you are stuck using Windows 10?
Hey, it’s not all that bad. You can still upgrade with minimal spending. For example, you can look for used PC components on eBay or Facebook Marketplace. Sure, there is always a risk of buying a lemon, but eBay has an exceptional buyer protection policy (no such luck for sellers, though). With a bit of time and research, you should be able to find quality pre-owned parts for cheap.
If you have a laptop or do not trust yourself to tinker with your desktop tower, we do have a solution for you. The easiest way to upgrade on a dime is a two-step solution:
1 – Sell your computer while it is still worth something.
2 – Use that cash to buy a newer pre-owned model, which can be 60-80% cheaper than buying a new one.
To sell a used laptop or a desktop in a pain-free, convenient, and safe way, head over to GadgetSalvation.com.
