If you’re a Tablet user, you know that write to it with both hands is a little uncomfortable after a while. The QWERTY keyboard layout is not so friendly for this use, so some researchers propose a new keyboard for KALQ called touch-screen devices.

They used models of movement of the thumb in a computational optimization algorithm for improving the write performance and minimize the effort of the thumbs. The result was KALQ, a keyboard that accommodates the keys in two areas within reach of the thumb.

With this new distribution, it is possible to write up to 37 words per minute, better than the 20 words that a QWERTY keyboard allows you to. Above all, is optimized to avoid injuries to the tendons and avoid problems with the famous “Nintendo thumb”.

Researchers will present their work at the Conference CHI 2013 in Paris, on May 1. KALQ will be available as a free application for smartphones based on Android in early May. [Physorg]
