The Microsoft Surface Go 2 is an affordable Windows 10 based business tablet computer for everyday tasks. It was announced alongside the Microsoft Surface Book 3 laptop last spring.

This convertible tablet got a 10.5-inch PixelSense display upgrade, a longer-lasting battery, yet it remained highly portable. Plus, optional LTE capability is an extra perk that allows users to stay connected virtually anywhere. Let’s take a closer look at the Microsoft Surface Go 2 tablet features.

Microsoft Surface Go 2: Pricing & Configurations

Microsoft offers several Surface Go 2 configurations, prices ranging from $399.99 to $729.99. All models support 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax wireless standard and the Bluetooth Wireless 5.0 technology.

  • The cheapest base Microsoft Surface Go 2 model comes with an Intel Pentium Gold 4425Y processor, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB eMMC storage.
  • The base can be configured to 8GB RAM and 128GB SSD storage during purchase for an additional $150 ($549.99 price tag).
  • There is also a Wi-Fi Intel Core M3 processor-based configuration, with 8GB RAM and 128GB SSD. This one currently goes for $629.99.
  • The LTE version of the M3 model costs $729.99.

Microsoft Surface Go 2: Surface Type Cover & Microsoft Pen

We should note that the Surface Type Cover is sold separately. But adding the keyboard cover basically turns this 10.5-inch tablet into an ultra-portable laptop computer. All thanks to the full Windows 10 S Mode version. Microsoft offers the following teachable keyboard covers color options: Ice Blue, Poppy Red, Black, and Platinum. And it will cost you an additional $69.99 to $129.99, depending on the color you choose.

The tablet also supports the Surface Pen and a Bluetooth cordless mouse.

Microsoft Surface Go 2: Design & Display

The Microsoft Surface Go 2 tablet design is somewhat similar to the more powerful Microsoft Surface Pro 7 model. It features a silver magnesium case with the mirror finish Microsoft logo on the back. However, being a 10.5-inch model, the Surface Go 2 version is visibly smaller and lighter than its 12.3-inch Surface Pro series counterparts. The model measures 0.3 inches thick and weighs only 1.25 lbs. The Surface Pro 7, on the other hand, is a 1.7 lb device. Granted, it also comes with better hardware.

As for the display, it is a PixelSense touchscreen with 1920 x1280 FHD resolution. This version also has a slightly higher pixel density of 220 pixels per inch and a 3:2 aspect ratio. And while it is standard for a tablet mode, you’ll notice it when using the Surface Go 2 as a laptop replacement. For example, in widescreen video format, you will see black bars above and below the footage.

Microsoft Surface Go 2: Cameras, Ports & Audio

Like all Surface tablets and convertibles, the Surface Go 2 features HD front- and rear-facing cameras. The front-facing 5.0 MP 1080p camera supports the Windows Hello Face authentification feature and is primarily used for facetime calls and video meetings. The rear-facing one is also 1080p HD and 8.0 MP auto-focus, great for photo and video capture.

The Surface Pro Go 2 is equipped with a surprising amount of ports for such a small device. You have the USB-C port, a combo headphone jack, and the Surface connector on the right side. While on the left side, you will find a microSD card reader, the power button, and Volume Control knobs.

We should also mention that the tablet comes with 2W Dolby Audio Premium stereo speakers that deliver decent quality audio. So listening to music, podcasts, audiobooks, and streaming shows can be quite enjoyable on this tablet. But if you seek deeper sound and a higher volume, investing in a pair of quality external speakers or headphones is unavoidable.

Microsoft Surface Go 2 Overall Performance

Note that the Microsoft Surface Go 2 is not a powerhouse device by any means. And while the tablet supports all Windows-based apps, it is meant to handle basic day-today-tasks. With the help of the Surface Go 2, you can take notes, write down ideas, do sketches, check your emails, and more. You can even do presentations with the help of the Microsoft Pen. The best part is, the tablet yields solid 10 hours of continuous use without needing to recharge. Plus, you can play free Windows games in between.

Besides, you get to choose how you use your software. For example, working in the S mode gives you access to a wide range of applications from the Microsoft Store.

Final Words

The Microsoft Surface Go 2 can come quite handy on the go. It serves both as a tablet and a laptop, thanks to the optional detachable keyboard cover. Surface Go 2 lets you stream your favorite shows, make notes, and more, making it a perfect little travel buddy. The best part is that the tablet can practically fit in your pocket. Unfortunately, Microsoft does not include the Surface Pen and the Type Cover with this model, forcing users to spend extra on these essential accessories. But considering what the tablet can do for such a moderate price tag, we think splurging on the keyboard is well worth it.
