Apple has a huge fanbase, and their laptops, namely the thinnest MacBook Airs, are no exclusion.
But is there a comparable, or even better, PC version? The Dell XPS 13 immediately comes to mind. The line has been one of the top-rated notebooks for a while because it ticks multiple checkboxes on many user lists. But if we compare the Dell XPS 13 vs. Apple MacBook Air, can it withstand the powerful Mac competitor?
Dell XPS 13 vs. MacBook Air 13: Design
For years Apple MacBook Air was the thinnest and the lightest laptop on the market. In 2023, it is no longer the case. Given that both models have changed a lot since they were first released (2008 for The MacBook Air and 2012 for the XPS 13), it makes sense to focus on the latest versions.
The latest Mac Air 13 model came out in 2022. Its size is as follows:
Size and Weight
- Height: 0.44 inch (1.13 cm)
- Width: 11.97 inches (30.41 cm)
- Depth: 8.46 inches (21.5 cm)
- Weight: 2.7 pounds (1.24 kg)
The latest XPS 13 (9315) version also was released in 2022. And while it is still not thinner than its rival, it actually is a little lighter, capping at 2.59 pounds:
Size and Weight
- Height: 0.55 inch (13.99 mm)
- Width: 11.63 inches (295.4 mm)
- Depth: 7.86 inches (199.4 mm)
- Weight (minimum): 2.59 pounds (1.17 kg)
Even the more expensive XPS Plus 13 9320 model is thicker than Apple.
Both feature aluminum chassis. But, the MacBook Air 13 uses 100% recycled aluminum, and it feels and looks more substantial compared to the XPS 13 9315. The latter, however, has better color options.
So to recap: The MacBook Air is thinner and boasts better-quality chassis.
Dell XPS 13 vs. MacBook Air: Performace
Again, let’s focus on the XPS 13 9315 and Air 13 2022 latest models benchmarks separately.
Dell XPS 13 9315 with Intel Core i5-1230U processor (base model)
Apple MacBook Air 13 M2 (2022)–base 8-Core CPU 8-Core GPU model
CPU Score:
Battery Comparison
The XPS 13 9315 has a 3-cell 51Whr li-ion battery (integrated). According to Dell, it lasts up to 12 hours.
Mac Air 2022 comes with a 52.6Whr battery pack, and users report significantly better yield. Some even say they can actively use their Air for two days straight without needing to recharge.
Again, in terms of overall performance, Apple MacBook Air 13 is a clear winner.
Dell XPS 13 vs. MacBook Air 13: Resale Value
OK, this one, again, goes to the MacBook Air. It is no secret that Apple laptops hold far better value over time than their Windows-based counterparts. And while computer technology keeps depreciating faster and faster, Apple somehow manages to retain its residual value. As a result, even 10-year-old(!) laptop models can still be resold via various re-commerce platforms, including GadgetSalvation.com.
Since the configurations above are still very much new, let’s have a look at the resale yield of some of the older models. For example:
- The Core i5-based Apple MacBook Air 2020 model sells for up to $320 used. At the same time, the M1 version yields up to a $340 offer.*
Lets now take a look at the comparable Dell XPS 13 9310:
- The XPS 13 9310 Intel Core i5 11th generation base model can be resold for up to $285. However, the 2-in-1 (convertible) Core i5 XPS 9310 version will yield its owner up to a $336 offer.*
As we can see, a used MacBook Air is more expensive than Dell XPS, even if you bought it refurbished. The exception would be the XPS 13 touchscreen models, something all Apple notebooks lack.
Bottom Line
Unlike several years ago, we have quite a few thin-and-light PC laptops ready to challenge the sleek Apple MacBook Air. The Dell XPS 13 immediately comes to mind when thinking about comparable devices. But, we have to admit that still in 2023, Mac is a clear winner of this Dell XPS 13 vs. MacBook Air 13 stand-off.
