Will there be a new MacBook Air laptop this year? And if so, when is the release date? Rumors about the new Mac Air suggest a new design, thinner display bezels, an M2 chip, and fresh color options. Here is what we know about if and when the new Macbook Air laptop is coming out so far.
The Release Date
So, when is the new MacBook Air coming out? While there is no exact launch date, we expect the MacBook Air to hit the market later this year. Bloomberg has suggested that the new MacBook Air will come in the Fall of 2022. Usually, Apple releases its new computers around October, so it makes sense to assume that a new MacBook Air will be announced on schedule.
No More Wedge
The future Apple MacBook Air laptop will likely have a refreshed design. Furthermore, multiple sources suggest that the tapered wedge look might be retired. If true, this could be the main and most significant design update to the new MacBook Air. As a result, the Air should look more like the recent MacBook Pro 14 Apple laptop.
However, as for ports, USB-C will remain the only output. And while we don’t expect Apple to add a mini-HDMI port to the upcoming MacBook Air lineup simply because of its ultra-narrow build, many users would have highly appreciated the micro-SD port reader.
Off-White Bezels and Keyboard
Some say that the new MacBook Air will have an off-white bezel and a matching keyboard. We also came across speculations about Apple adding more colors to their Air lineup, just like they did with their 24-inch iMac models. If those are true, the upcoming Apple MacBook Air will look slightly similar to the old MacBook Pro unibody model.
The New MacBook Air Might Be Coming out in More Color Options
Apple fans speculate about adding the following colors to the new Mac Air line: Silver, yellow, blue, orange, green, purple, and pink. But we won’t be surprised if Apple throws in some other fun new colors in the mix.
Mini LED Display
MacBook Pro 16, MacBook Pro 14, and the iPad Pro 12.9-inch were the first Apple products to sport the Mini-LED display technology. And we hope to see it on the latest MacBook Air when it comes out. But we are unsure about the notch design and whether the new MacBook Air will look similar to the MacBook Pro 14 laptop.
As for the screen size, nothing new here: Apple sticks with the traditional 13-inch display panel. However, it might be a slightly bigger 13.6-inch version this time instead of the standard 13.3-inch.
Is the New MacBook Air Coming Out with the M2 Chip?
Rumors suggest that the Apple M2 chip will make its debut this year. Yet, it will not be as powerful as the M1 Pro or M1 Max chips used in the 2021 MacBook Pro models. The M2 CPU is still expected to feature eight cores and deliver fast performance. It could also have improved graphics with nine or 10 GPU cores, up from seven or eight in the current M1 Mac models.
But What About the Name?
A recent rumor has claimed that the newest Apple laptop might not be branded as MacBook Air. Instead, they might start calling it a MacBook. This would explain the off-white bezels and somewhat nostalgic chassis design. Of course, we don’t know if that’s true, but Apple already did the same thing in the past with their now-discontinued 12-inch MacBook.
Final Thoughts
So, If you want to upgrade to the new MacBook Air, why not sell your used MacBook for some cash instead? That way, your outdated laptop could help you offset the cost of the new toy. Meanwhile, we hope the new MacBook Air lives up to the hype when it comes out.
