Thinking about upgrading to the latest Apple M1 chip MacBook Pro? The manufacturer claims that its ARM-based M1 processor offers superior performance compared to Intel, making it the fastest processor available today. Besides, Apple installed the M1 processor on its most recent MacBook Pro and MacBook Air laptops. Not sure which is a better fit for you? Our 2020 MacBook Air vs. MacBook Pro post can help you decide.

But what about your old Mac? If it’s in good condition, you can sell your used MacBook Pro for some extra cash. This guide will walk you through the process.

1. Know Your MacBook Pro Model

You’ll need its exact model to determine your MacBook Pro’s resale value. Here’s how to find it:

  • About This Mac: Click the Apple menu in the top left corner and select “About This Mac.”
  • Original Box: The model information is printed on the back.
  • Serial Number: Find the serial number on the bottom cover and use an online Apple serial number lookup tool to get the year make, processor type, and the exact model number.

2. Back Up Your Data

Backing up your data is crucial before selling.

iCloud:

  • Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Apple ID (this step is not needed if you are using macOS Mojave or earlier).
  • Sign in with your Apple ID.
  • Select iCloud Drive and add your files.

Time Machine:

  • Connect an external USB or Thunderbolt storage device.
  • Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Time Machine.
  • Click on “Select Backup Disk” to choose your drive.

3. Sign Out All Accounts

To protect your privacy, sign out of all accounts:

  • Turn off Find My Mac (System Preferences > Apple ID > iCloud).
  • Sign out of iCloud, iMessage, iTunes, and other apps.

4. Perform MacBook Internet Recovery

Since you intend to sell your MacBook Pro for cash, you must first restore it to factory settings. To do that, follow these steps:

  • Power down your MacBook Pro.
  • Turn it back on while holding down the Command and R keys.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to erase your drive and perform a fresh macOS install.

Additionally, our How to factory reset an Apple laptop blog post provides more information on recovering a used Apple computer to its defaults.

5. Unpair Your Bluetooth Devices

Unpair any connected Bluetooth devices:

  • Go to System Preferences > Bluetooth.
  • Select the device and click the “X” icon to remove it.

6. Clean Your Laptop

Thoroughly clean outer surfaces if you want the highest cash payout. Trust us, no one wants to deal with a dirty and stained MacBook Pro.

To do that:

  • Use a soft, lint-free cloth with a mild electronics cleaning solution or Windex.
  • Avoid abrasive cleaners and 90% isopropyl alcohol.
  • Do not use water directly.
  • A 70% isopropyl alcohol solution (IPA) removes tough stains, smudges, and fingerprints well.

7. Gather Accessories

Please don’t forget to locate the original accessories, including:

  • Power adapter and cord
  • Manuals
  • Original box (if available)

While most resale platforms do not offer extra cash for the charger, there is usually a deduction if it is missing. The box and the paperwork are generally unnecessary, but you might want to throw them in to recycle.
