The Legion 7i is yet another great gaming laptop model from Lenovo. It comes with the 10th generation Intel Core i processors and NVIDIA RTX graphics. Furthermore, the model got an updated cooler system and a 240Hz refresh rate display, but we will talk about it in more detail below.

In this post we will be focusing on the Intel Core i7 RTX 2080 based configuration (part number 81YT0005US). And if you are more into AMD based gaming hardware, please check out our post on the Legion 5 Pro model.

Summary of the Lenovo Legion 7i 81YT0005US Specifications

  • Intel Core i7-1075H CPU
  • 32GB DDR4 RAM memory
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Super Max-Q 8GB
  • 15.6” FHD display, 240GHz, 500 nits
  • 512 GB PCIe SSD + 1 TB PCIe SSD
  • Price after web savings: $2,479.99 + tax

Design

The new Lenovo Legion 7i is incredibly thin for a gaming laptop, yet it is pretty solid. Looks-wise, it is almost identical to the Legion 5i model, yet, there are some key differences. The Lenovo Legion 7i is even thinner and lighter, weighting only about 4.6 pounds. Its brushed metal chassis paired with subtle RGB panels looks very minimal and classy. There are currently six different Legion 7i configurations offered on the Lenovo site, the most expensive being $3199.99 + tax (or $2,889.99 discounted).

The model features LED light trims around fans covers, plus LED strips on the bottom, and, of course per-key RGB lighting keyboard. The Legion “Y” logo is elegantly laser-engraved in Slate Gray finish. All in all, the Lenovo Legion 7i looks like a very expensive premium gaming laptop.

Display

The Lenovo Legion 7i model comes with the 15.6-inch FHD 1920 x 1080 matte display, providing for most immersive gaming experience. The panel offers rich color contrast and saturation with 100% Adobe sRGB Color Gamut paired with Vesa DisplayHDR 400 technology.

Just like the Legion 5i model, the Lenovo Legion 7i display can be rotated to 180 degrees, meaning you can “flatten” it out. It does have a cutoff switch at the top that you can move the physical switch to make sure it’s in private mode.

Laptop’s screen is perfect for an immersive gaming experience due to being a 240Hz refresh rate model. And 500 nits brightness provides for an enhanced and hyper-realistic image. We should note that this specific model does not support G-SYNC however.

Ports

The awesome part is that the Legion 7i ports have cool LED trims. We find this feature very handy. It offers the following I/O ports:

  • Headphone/mic combo jack
  • RJ45, Kensington lock slot
  • Two USB type-C ports (one of those is Thunderbolt 3)
  • HDMI 2.0
  • Three USB 3.2 ports
  • Power DC jack.

Performance

This model is powered by the Intel Core i7-1075H processor, 2.6GHz base speed. You also get 32GB DDR4 2933MHz memory, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Super Max-Q video card, and two storage drives (1 TB PCIe SSD + 512 GB PCIe SSD).

Lenovo Legion 7i laptop pleasantly surprises with a decent and fast performance, and even handles AAA title games with no lags. Yet some games, like Overwatch, Grand Theft Auto V, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, to name a few, can cause the laptop to overheat. Gamers report that setting the system into the highest performance mode yields the best results, similarly to HP Omen 15 and MSI GS66 gaming models of the same class.

When it comes to using the laptop for digital work, like running Photoshop and Adobe Premiere Pro smoothly, the system needs some optimizing. Asus Zephyrus G14 has done better in that regard, even though the model is RXT 2060 Max-Q based.

Thermals

This model features an integrated 2mm Vapor Chamber and an updated 6-point thermal sensor array that will keep the laptop cool and quiet. It also has a dual fan system with 73 liquid-crystal polymer fan blades, made for enhancing the dedicated thermal channels and for a better air flow. Moreover, with the Lenovo Q-Control 3.0 feature you can manually control the system fan speeds and voltage. For instance, in case your laptop starts getting too hot, you can activate the thermal throttle. After a few minutes, it will switch from thermal throttling to power throttling.

Keyboard

Lenovo Legion 7i laptop features the Lenovo TrueStrike keyboard which is soft-landing switches with 1.3mm key travel. It is a numeric keyboard with a great comfortable layout and dedicated media keys. Each key is individually lit and customizable thanks to RGB per-key technology with over 16 million different color combos. Both keyboard and chassis LED colors are adjustable via Corsair iCUE support.

There are however some concerns about the touchpad: it appears to have a small gap. Perhaps, you might be wondering if it would be an issue for the long term? Is it going to break on you? The answer is that it is unlikely to cause any problems. For example, the MSI GS75 gaming laptop has the same thing on the top of its trackpad, yet it doesn’t feel cheap, nor does it malfunction.

Bottom Line

So, if you are looking for a laptop with a lot of flexibility and a great ports selection, look no further. The Lenovo Legion 7i looks and performs as a premium laptop computer should, plus you get six different configurations to choose from.
