In a time when the world’s biggest tech companies treat consumers to new powerful handsets every year, people have developed a craving for the details on the next big thing before the companies themselves even make any announcements. And today, more fans are becoming more skilled at fishing for leaks about phone specs and release dates. Over the years, Motorola has been able to gather a pretty solid fan base through its line of powerful yet affordable handsets. And this year, Motorola followers and fans of other phone brands alike are all raving about the Motorola G series.
The budget trio
When talking about reputation in terms of budget, quality smartphones, Motorola is difficult to dethrone. As most phone brands nowadays strive for fancy, high-end designs, Motorola remains true to its trademark of providing high-performance handsets at affordable prices with the G6 and G6 Play.
The G6 and G6 Play are two of the three budget phones Motorola is set to launch this year. The G6 is believed to be the middle guy, balancing the posh features of the G6 Plus and the unpretentious quality of the G6 Play. The G6 has a 5.6-inch display, an 18:9 aspect ratio, above 1080p high-definition resolution, a fingerprint scanner, a 32GB maximum storage capacity, and a dual rear camera system. For having a price believed to be not anywhere above $250, the G6 promises to be worth all the hype.
The G6 Play, on the other hand, is meant to be the entry-level handset among the trio. Though basic in most ways, G6 Play boasts a high-power battery capacity of 4,000 mAh (36 hours maximum) versus the 3,000 mAh capacity of the G6. Consequently, the G6 Play also weighs more than the G6 and G6 Plus at 175g. But like its two more premium brothers, the G6 Play also sports TurboPower fast charging and Bluetooth 4.2. And despite being the simplest of the three models, the G6 Play nonetheless promises other features such as a 5.7-inch display slightly bigger than the G6, a Snapdragon 427 processor, 3GB RAM, and a 720p HD resolution. The G6 Play is also estimated to cost just around $200.
The individual features of the G6 and G6 Play emphasize how Motorola puts an effort in creating products according to the varying needs of its customers. It’s even counterintuitive, in a way, to put these two handsets head-to-head, because aside from being in the same family, these two phones were clearly built for two different market segments with very different sets of needs.
Worth the wait
Motorola is a prominent tech brand. Anybody who has ever owned a mobile phone—regardless of brand—knows Motorola and what its products look like. Based on the general public reception of its products, Motorola seems like a brand that always gives. The G series is already available in Brazil and will arrive likely in other Latin American countries within the next few weeks. Reports say the rest of the world would have to wait until the latter half of May 2018. But considering the impressive specs that the Moto G6 promises, a few more weeks of waiting doesn’t seem to hurt.
